For something quick, use a can of biscuits (not the flaky layered kind)and just pinch off pieces and roll them into a ball and deep fry til brown. Then roll in cinnamon and sugar or just plain sugar as soon as you get them out of the oil. My grandmother (who is Italian) would do this for a quick after school snack.

These look great. It will be added to the growing list of recipes to try and your blog is now bookmarked.

I was amused by your About page since your small island is the largest island of the 1000 islands. My parents live up on Howe Island.
