When I say death by
chocolate, I mean it. Today was one of
my most dreaded at work: Thumbprint day.
The chocolate caramel and walnut cookies I make at the Bake are beyond
good. I have a customer who once
admitted that she buys them and then hides them in the trunk of her car so she
doesn’t have to share with her family.
If you’re willing to go to those lengths you know they must be good. They are however a giant pain in the arse to
make. First, you have to make the dough
the day before. Next I chop the walnuts,
ball up the dough, dip the cookies in egg whites, roll them in walnuts, make an
indentation, bake them, and frantically make another indentation before they
cool. Dripping with sweat and with
shaking hands (ok not quite) I then fill them with caramel and drizzle them
with chocolate. Frankly it’s exhausting
and many times I have cursed my stupid self for keeping them on the menu. But they are so good and such a good seller
that I just can’t stop. Today I pretty
much thought they would be the death of me and after four hours of chocolate
and nuts and caramel, I was ready to crawl into bed and call it a life. So come on down to the bake, buy your
thumbprints and finish me off.
